Home is a quick read about the size of a Novella but you get to know Frank, the main character as if you were meeting him in a novel. It is classic Toni Morrison themes of identity, family, loss, and healing. The plot is set in the 1950's after Frank comes home from the Korean War. Korean War Vets didn't receive the attention or the adulation that WWII Vets received. It is a god portrait of a soldier coming home from a largely integrated army to a segregated country. The plot weaves his PTSD, racial themes and his relationship with his sister to tell a moving story of 1950's African American Life.
I couldn't put this book down because Toni Morrison wrote it with warmth and urgency seldom seen in this type of novel. I wanted to see not only what happened next but I wanted to be with my new friend Frank and hear his story. Written in both first and third person it was fun and easy to follow.
